The elaborate and glittering State Banqueting Room, highly theatrical in style, was the perfect backdrop for the celebrated feasts that George would have offered his courtiers and guests. The Royal Pavilion, steeped in history and heritage, has been hosting the city's finest events since the 1780's. It stands majestically, the jewel in Brighton's crown, restored to its original 1823 splendour with Indian architecture contrasted with lavish interiors inspired by the Orient. It was originally built as a seaside pleasure palace for the Prince Regent, later to become King George IV, when Brighton was at the height of fashionable Regency society. George, renowned for his extravagant and decadent lifestyle almost bankrupted the country in pursuit of this magnificent palace.
