Frequently asked questions

What are the hire fees for the main conference spaces at Tate Modern?
For conferences, the South Room is priced at £5,000 + VAT for full-day daytime hire (08:00–18:00, guest access 09:00–17:00), and £9,000 + VAT for evening hire (18:00–00:00). The East Room is £4,000 + VAT for daytime hire (same hours) and £7,000 + VAT for evening hire, with guest access from 19:00–23:00.
What is included in the venue hire fee for the South Room or East Room?
Venue hire includes an event manager, gallery security, and cleaning. All other services—catering, AV, floristry, and production—are not included and must be arranged separately at additional cost.
What are the capacity limits for conferences in these spaces?
The South Room accommodates up to 200 guests theatre style or 168 on round tables (cabaret) for daytime events, and up to 300 standing or 250 seated for evenings. The East Room holds up to 100 theatre style, 48 cabaret, or 150 standing (evening only); maximum dinner capacity is 80.
What are the standard timings for hire, and can these be extended?
Standard daytime hire hours are 08:00–18:00 (guest access 09:00–17:00), and evening hire runs from 18:00–00:00 (guest access from 19:00). Extended event hire is available at £1,750 + VAT per hour for evenings, and additional setup/build time is charged at £1,125 + VAT per hour.
How does catering work for conferences, and what are the costs?
Tate Modern operates on a dry hire basis; all catering must be provided by Tate's in-house catering team. Example catering packages are £140 + VAT per person for a standing canapé/bowl food reception or from £250 + VAT per person for a sit-down dinner, inclusive of staff, equipment, and basic drinks packages as detailed in individual quotes.
Can external caterers or suppliers be used for my event?
No, external catering is not permitted. Only Tate’s own catering team can provide food and beverage services in these spaces. Production and AV suppliers must also be drawn from Tate's list of accredited suppliers.
What AV provisions are available and what are the associated costs?
AV is not included in the venue hire. AV services must be arranged with Tate's accredited AV suppliers; estimated costs for a full conference setup (including stage, screens, microphones, lighting) start from £10,000, but you must obtain a detailed quote based on your specific requirements.
Are there restrictions on event content or format in these spaces?
Yes. Private exhibitions or displays cannot be described or promoted as exhibitions curated by Tate or as museums, to avoid confusion with Tate’s own programming. Dry hire is strictly for private events; public exhibitions or performances are not permitted unless Tate-led.
How do I book the space and what is the process from enquiry to confirmation?
Initial email or platform enquiry is followed by discussion of requirements with the sales team. Provisional holds are possible if the date is available. Booking confirmation typically requires agreement on terms and a deposit payment; specific payment schedules are not provided but should be clarified with the Tate sales team.
Are there any other mandatory additional costs or service fees I should budget for?
Beyond venue hire and catering/AV costs, no other mandatory fees are stated. Optional extras include additional build or breakdown hours (£1,125 + VAT per hour) and late finishes (£1,750 + VAT per hour, evenings only). Floristry, décor, and enhanced cleaning or technical support are not included in the base fees and must be arranged separately.
Are there any unusual restrictions or venue-specific rules I should be aware of?
There is no outside access in these rooms, though they do offer significant natural light. All branding and decor must be approved in advance; production activity may be limited by lift size or access depending on the space. No smoking or haze/smoke effects are permitted except by specific written agreement (with an associated charge where permitted).
