A Day In The Life Of The Hire Space Sales Team

With over 12,000 venues and a whole host of in-person, hybrid and virtual event services, it's safe to say we're kept pretty busy here at Hire Space. So you may be wondering, what is life like for the sales team at a company like Hire Space? Well, now's your chance to find out!

We sat down with Account Executive Phil Rose to grill him on all things sales, day-to-day tasks and why he loves his job. Read on for some insider info and check out our job vacancies if you like what you see. You could also check out more about our team culture to get more insight.

What is a typical day in the life of the Hire Space sales team?

Morning

My morning consists of catching up with the team, checking emails that might have come in overnight, organising my to-do list and prioritising tasks. Once the admin part is out of the way, I'll start by working on client enquiries, liaising with venues, running virtual demos, and putting proposals together.

Each day is different and there is always an element of surprise as you constantly get new leads to work on. Also, our clients’ event lead times can vary from days to years, so the urgency set on projects differs a lot!

Afternoon

Afternoons usually consist of tying up loose ends, sending out offers, checking in and following up with clients.

We usually finish work for the day between 5.30 - 6pm. We may head off to a networking evening with potential clients, or attend an exclusive showcase or familiarisation event (fam trip) at venues across London. These fam trips are a great opportunity to check out new venues, updated offerings, and sample the food and drink! Whilst these trips are fun, they are also a very important aspect of our jobs - we need to stay on top of all new spaces so that we can recommend the best possible venues to our clients.

Usually a few members across the Hire Space team attend these fam trips, so they're also a great chance to socialise with colleagues too. Recent fam trips we've attended include Clays, Hijingo, TOCA Social and Sixes Cricket, and we've got plenty more in the diary!

What's your favourite part about working on the sales team?

There are so many reasons why working on the Hire Space sales team is great, but to name a few:

  • Each day is so different! There is never a dull moment; we have a huge enquiry volume and work with different clients across different industries all with different event briefs, so you’re never bored or having to deal with the same thing over and over again.
  • The sales team is the core of the company, which means that we get to interact with all aspects of the business and have an impact on our overall service offering.
  • Our roles cover so many different aspects so we're constantly learning and growing. We all share the same vision and are dedicated to the mission of bringing joy to event organisers. We also spend a lot of time together, so it helps that everyone gets on really well and motivates each other.
  • All the industry perks! We are always off on fam trips checking out cool new venues, enjoying delicious dinners, sipping champagne at drinks receptions and even, when we're really lucky, bagging invites to awards ceremonies like the National Television Awards.

"We really do offer everything a client needs, which we're extremely proud of and means we can make a client's vision a reality from start to finish." Phil Rose, Account Executive, Hire Space

How does your role compare to previous sales roles at different companies?

Hire Space enables their employees to forge their own paths and build their careers. There is a lot of flexibility and trust given to all of us: we learn from mistakes and treat them as learnings, creating space for improvement.

We all grow alongside the company, by listening to our customers' needs but also by being open to suggestions from the team. Each of us is also involved in cross-team projects, which means that we get to learn about other aspects of the business too.

What's your favourite part about working for Hire Space in general?

Working for Hire Space is exciting! Our founders are constantly innovating and coming up with the next big thing, and this entrepreneurial approach rubs off on the whole team - we have our finger on the pulse of the events industry and we're all constantly evolving, adapting and seeking new solutions. For example, during the pandemic, we created a Safer Events Accreditation for organisers and venues and were also heavily involved with government lobbying on behalf of the events industry. We also developed a virtual Christmas party offering as well as our very own hybrid events platform, Arena, which is exciting to be a part of.

Secondly, Hire Space cultivates a very collaborative environment - there is a lot of support and praise of each other’s work, we listen to feedback and then turn ideas into a reality. Without the great team we have at Hire Space, none of what we do would be possible!

We're also given flexibility in how we work, with one day a week in a cool London office, monthly team lunches, weekly socials, extra days off and an annual Hire Space retreat. We were shortlisted for three industry awards in 2021, which is testament to the hard work of the team and the creative, productive atmosphere that is fostered every single day - it's no surprise our monthly team survey results are always so positive.

Would you recommend this role to others and why?

100%. There is so much room for progression in the Hire Space sales team; promotions are no rarity - if you work hard and hit your targets, this is always recognised and rewarded. Our results are also rewarded in the commission that we receive from each booking we make.

I’d recommend this role to anyone who is resilient, eager to learn and who enjoys creating and nurturing professional relationships in a fun, fast-paced company. Although we are fairly independent when it comes to our individual work, we are a tight-knit sales team who are always there if you need a helping hand. There's a reason so many of us have stuck around year after year!

If you love the sound of working for Hire Space, we've got lots of openings across the company including in sales, tech and account management. Check out our job vacancies and apply now - we'd love to hear from you!
