Venue Review: Private Dining at the Groucho

The demand for private members’ clubs in London exploded in the 19th century, thanks to the Reform Acts of 1832, 1867 and 1885 extending the right to vote to an increasing number of people (men). At its peak in the 1880s, London had around 400 Gentlemen’s Clubs to accommodate the increasing number of men who saw themselves elevated to the status of 'Gentleman' thanks to their right to vote.

So fast forward one hundred years (thankfully the Reform Acts of 1918 and 1928 have finally given women the right to vote) and we arrive at the opening of a thoroughly modern club, The Groucho Club. Open to everyone, the Groucho was formed not as a stuffy sanctuary for the elite but as a watering hole for a more bohemian membership. Attracting members from the arts, film, publishing and the other creative industries, the club has become a thriving and vibrant venue in the London events scene.

Of course, as most creatives will know, being so damned arty eats an awful lot of energy, which is why the Groucho Club offers such a fantastic private dining experience. With three gorgeously charming and sophisticated private dining rooms, available to be booked by non-members, the Groucho is a must for anyone looking to host a private dinner.

The Gennaro Room provides an elegant and adaptable space for dining. The bright and airy feel makes it an excellent choice for hosting lunches, while The Mackintosh Room offers a more earthy aesthetic and also makes a superb meeting room for board meetings. Finally, the Snooker Room is a quirky hidden gem. The playfully sophisticated decor is ideal for intimate birthday dinners or drinks and features a full sized snooker table and state-of-the-art sound system.

The menus available at the Groucho are a gastronomic treat. In particular, the Autumn menu offers a delicious choice of winter warmers perfect for feeding the soul in this cold weather. From hearty classics like roast rump of Cornish lamb to exotic dishes like miso-glazed sea bass with steamed bok choy, toasted rice, white soy and yuzu, the Groucho’s food will delight the senses and your guests.
