Opened by Queen Victoria in 1845, the Great Hall, complete with striking fresco, minstrel's gallery and a ceiling of beautifully worked oak, is described as one of the most impressive surviving buildings of its kind in London and provides a spectacular backdrop for dinners for up to 280 guests. Complete with adjoining Bench Rooms, or East Terrace in fine weather, guests are welcomed for an arrival reception before making their way through imposing wooden doors to the magnificence of the Great Hall to dine.

Frequently asked questions

For dining events requiring 120+ guests, you must use the Old Hall/Crypt (dating back to 1490). The Old Hall accommodates up to 120 for dinner or 200 standing. Meeting spaces require a minimum of 30 guests to book.

Room hire for the Old Hall & Crypt costs £2,750 for evening events (17:30 setup, 18:30-22:30 event, de-rig by 23:00). There is also a minimum food & beverage spend of £7,310, bringing the total minimum cost to £10,060 + VAT.

Events typically run until 16:00 with all guests departed by 16:30 for daytime events. Evening events can run until 22:30 with de-rig by 23:00, though extensions are available with bar closing at 00:00 and guests departing by 00:30 for an additional £960 + VAT.

The venue is closed for the entire month of August and during Easter (17 April from 15:00, reopening 28 April). No events can be booked during these closure periods.

Outside food is strictly prohibited - only in-house catering is allowed. Day delegate rates start at £91 + VAT per person (minimum 140 guests) or £104 + VAT for enhanced packages. Conference suite day delegate rates are £127.20 + VAT per person for 90-158 delegates.

Security services are mandatory for certain events at £480 + VAT (£400 + VAT). Depending on your caterer's requirements, there may be additional small fees. All costs are subject to 20% VAT.

Availability varies significantly by day and season. For example, in November there are typically Wednesdays and Fridays available but no Thursdays. Some weeks may be completely unavailable, so flexibility with dates is essential.

The venue is not suitable for sixth form proms, events requiring DJ/loud music, or events that don't meet minimum guest requirements. Some event types may be declined if they don't align with the venue's character and standards.

Christmas packages are available at £176 + VAT per person (minimum 90 guests). This includes hire of Old Hall & Crypt, arrival champagne reception, unlimited drinks (spirits, wine, beer, sparkling wine), nibbles, 5 canapés and 3 bowl food items.

Bookings should be made well in advance as popular dates fill quickly. The venue can put dates on tentative hold while you decide. Autumn menu selections and pricing are typically confirmed later in the year for following year events.
