Ever wondered what it'd be like to live in a medieval village? Would you be the wandering minstrel or the loyal squire? The friendly friar or the feared barber-surgeon? The Hire Space team no longer had to imagine, as they were immersed in a centuries-ago world at the historic Ivory Vaults, during a night that was filled with mead and mirth...and then more mead.
Let the trusty scribe tell you more.
The Ivory Vaults, of course, is a Grade-II listed building located at the waterside haven of St Katharine's Docks – and, as the name suggests, the venue is made up of vaulted cellars, with a colossal 10,000 square feet of space. This, all in the vicinity of Tower Hill, makes for a charming space for private dinners, drinks, wedding receptions among other events.
So it was here that the Hire Space team was welcomed for an immersive experience, which started off with us donning medieval garb, meaning we were bonafide knights and wenches from the get-go. Villagers were then introduced to The King, before they were seated for dinner.
The long, dressed tables were ideal for creating an atmosphere of the age-old banquet, as was the entertainment that took place in the middle of the room. Namely, dancers, jugglers, acrobats and contortionists frolicked while singers sang merry medieval notes and knights jousted before our eyes.
This all took place, of course, while we gorged ourselves fit for rivalling Henry VIII's digestive capacities. (We really had no choice, as we didn't want to offend The King and risk an Anne-Boleyn-style downfall...) But it didn't take much persuasion for us to dig into the meal, which began with a smorgasbord of meats, cheeses and crispy pickled vegetables.
This was the lead-up to the inspired main event, comprising roasted chicken cooked in a traditional manner, with the trimmings. All culminated in old-fashioned spiced apple pie with cream. Just like Middle-Age mama used to make it. Oh, and we haven't even mentioned the unlimited drinks. Mead by the goblet, anyone?
If, for whatever reason, medieval isn't quite your thing (if, say, it brings back bad memories of a particularly painful jousting accident), The Ivory Vaults hosts plenty of other themed nights, including Masquerade Balls and Viking Nights. What's more, the space can be hired for up to 450 people – so, the actual population of a medieval village.
We at Hire Space certainly enjoyed our introduction to the Middle Ages, with its charms and menaces, and would highly recommend it for both small and large groups looking for a social occasion filled with laughs and knightly chivalry. For an extra charge, you can even keep your medieval costumes, to wear to fancy dress parties. Or to work, if you're looking for attention or a call to the boss's office.
